The pacing, the panting, the shaking, the whining, the drooling. Anxious dogs and cats may greet the Thundershirt with relief.

Whether your pet’s anxiety stems from a fear of loud noises (fireworks, thunderstorms, vacuum cleaners), strangers or riding in the car, the Thundershirt can help to significantly pacify your pet by providing constant, gentle pressure — similar to the calming effect swaddling has on infants.

According to the manufacturer, based on surveys completed by more than 2,000 customers, 80 percent of dogs and cats showed significant improvement with anxiety symptoms by using the Thundershirt.

The Thundershirt manufacturers say it is a safe and easy-to-use alternative to sedation drugs that can be pricey and cause harmful side effects and/or behavior training, which also can be expensive, not to mention time-consuming. It comes in a range of sizes from XS for animals less than seven pounds to XXL for animals weighing more than 110 pounds. It also comes in a variety of colors, including blue, green, heather gray, pink and holiday red (limited edition).

The Thundershirt retails for around $39.99 and is available at area PetSmart stores.
