“One of my clients nominated me,” Burkhardt said. “Their dog’s name is Reese’s Cup. She said ‘I’ve always shown compassion to her pets. She is a very capable and caring doctor and I trust her’.”
The contest was open for one month, and the winner was decided by online vote. Burkhardt received about 1,400 votes.
The goal of the contest is to recognize outstanding veterinarians who have made a positive impact on their patients and the community.
“They sent a letter to tell me I was nominated,” Burkhardt said. “I had never heard of the competition, so I was definitely surprised.”
Burkhardt grew up in Michigan and attended UD for her undergraduate degree.
“I was always interested in medicine and going back and forth between human medicine and animal medicine,” she said. “I discovered that I enjoy working with animals. I like the variety I see every day.”
Burkhardt shares her Centerville home with four cats, three dogs and two sons.
“I am really dedicated to my profession and it’s something I think about all the time,” she said. “I go home at night and think about my patients and clients. Their well being is very important to me. I am really close to a lot of my clients.”
Future plans include volunteering with rescue groups and nonprofit groups.
“Even though I was nominated all the doctors I work with are wonderful doctors,” she said. “Any one of us could have been nominated. Our practice is really caring; I’m really lucky to be in such a great practice.”
