How can we turn a deaf ear to child abuse?

I have been reading and listening with profound sorrow about the death of little Caleb Durig.

It is an inhuman act to inflict sadistic acts upon anyone, much less your own child, as is alleged in this case. And only marginally less offensive to allow it to be done to your child, as is also alleged.

I am almost as stunned by the lack of community involvement in this tragedy. Why do we sit by and do nothing when there is an opportunity to save a child’s life and then lament about what you saw or heard and yet didn’t call 911 or Children’s Services?

Who can listen to such abuse and turn a deaf ear? What has happened to our society that such a thing is possible?
