Pontifical Divine Liturgy to be celebrated

DAYTON —“This is truly a big event, not only for St. Barbara’s but for Dayton Catholics in general,” says an excited Bill Woryk.

He’s talking about 4 p.m. March 13, when Bishop John Kudrick, bishop of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Parma, will celebrate a Pontifical Divine Liturgy at St. Stephen Catholic Church, which shares facilities with St. Barbara Byzantine Catholic Church.

The house of worship is located at 114 Troy St. in Dayton. St. Barbara is an Eastern Rite Catholic Church, descended from the traditions and customs of Greece rather than Rome. The word “Byzantine” comes from the city of Byzantium, the old name for the city of Istanbul.

“It’s the first time in my lifetime that I can remember a pontifical liturgy being celebrated in my local parish,” says Woryk, who lives in Troy. “St. Barbara’s is one of only a couple of Eastern churches in the Dayton area.”

The Divine Liturgy is the church’s preferred name for what the West calls Mass. Woryk says the public is encouraged and invited to attend.

“If we recognize that visitors are in attendance, we will generally hold a question-and-answer session afterwards, over refreshments, to explain the liturgy,” he says.

A potluck supper will follow. For information, call (937) 339-0087.
