Leung, who also has an MBA, has always been a do-it-yourselfer and with his mechanical background, knew he could fix most motors himself. “If dentists have broken equipment, they can’t see patients,” he said. “I’m an engineer so I figured I could help them.”
He came across a franchise company, “Dental Fix RX,” headquartered in Florida and after visiting the Columbus, Ohio office knew he could be successful because he enjoys the challenge of putting equipment and machinery in top condition.
“I researched and first asked the question, ‘does Dayton have enough dentists for us to do this?’” Leung said. “And I determined it could be done so in November, we made a big commitment as a family and I quit my job in order to open the business.”
Leung spent eight weeks training at the headquarters in Florida and learned all the equipment, the repair techniques and returned home to launch his business.
Dental Fix RX completes repairs on-site from mobile repair centers that are equipped to fix a wide range of equipment found in any practice — from compressors to chair upholstery. The company was founded in 2009 and, it turns out, is the revolutionizing the dental service industry due to its immediate, on-demand equipment service, hand piece repairs and cost effective products.
“Things have been going great,” Leung said. “I now work with 57 offices in the Dayton area and have found a huge need for this business.”
Leung travels across four counties as far south as Mason and Westchester and as far north as Troy and Piqua.
Prior to Dental Fix RX, Leung had limited experience with working on his own. “This is my first official business venture,” he said. “I’m in my 30’s and I figured if I don’t do it now, I would never know. I was really looking for something that would be a good fit for my competency.”
For Leung the idea of helping people appeals and using his skillset to ensure dental offices remain operational is a bonus.
“The most common item to malfunction in a dental office is the high speed hand piece,” Leung said. “If they don’t use Dental Fix, they have to mail it out and it may not come back for four — six weeks. I can fix it in their parking lot and give it back to them. We have all the equipment in the van.”
Leung’s company also offers a loaner program to help when equipment does need to be sent out, such as a sterilizer, which has the potential to shut down an entire office.
“When an office is closed, they can’t see patients,” Leung said. “They call me right away and I can come by with a loaner piece of equipment free of charge. They call me in a panic and I tell them not to worry. They can keep their appointments.”
In his free time, Leung is also a National Child Passenger Safety Technician and gives back to the local community by providing education to families about the proper use of car seats and seatbelts.
“As a business owner, I understand that trust, integrity and peace of mind matter,” Leung said. “I want to make sure the local dentist offices have a fair, convenient and fast repair option to save them time and money.”
