As it has considered what to do with food trucks over past couple of months, the board has reviewed the Miami County Public Health Department’s rules for mobile food operations.
The planning board recommends that the trucks would be allowed in all non-residential zoning districts with private property parking by permission. A $50 annual fee was recommended along with a requirement that anyone parking a food truck could not leave any trash behind.
Before voting on its recommendations on March 12, the Planning Board heard from Shane Snapp, program manager, environmental health, Miami County Public Health.
Food trucks are licensed through their home county, Snapp said, adding many of the trucks seen at Miami County events are licensed out of Montgomery County with a state license for anywhere in Ohio. The biggest issues for most trucks are water and power, he said.
Those trucks found to be going beyond what their permit allows are asked to leave an event or location, Snapp said.
“We have tons of mobiles. It is more popular, and it is much different than the concessions food businesses of the past,” he said.
Planning board member Vonda Alberson said she had some concerns about the food trucks possibly crowding into business traditionally done by booster and other support groups at some events.
Spring said the city can try the regulations and, if issues arise, can take another look at the rules. “We certainly can revisit anything that is not working,” he said.
Miami County’s biggest food truck event is held as a fundraiser by the county Agricultural Society at the Fairgrounds just north of Troy. This year’s Food Truck Competition is May 18 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
