If you’d like to be of help to Vietnam vets consider making a donation to the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Proceeds from organization’s Household Goods Donations Program help support the needs of veterans throughout the nation and elsewhere through scholarships, work with the homeless, and more.

Quentin Butcher, business director for Vietnam Veterans of America in Washington, explains that the organization needs and accepts a wide variety of items, and will pick it up from you free of charge.

“We don’t own thrift stores, so we profit from the donations by selling directly to privately-owned thrift stores,” Butcher says.

The organization is happy to receive any items that one person can carry. Here are some suggestions:

  • Gently used clothing
  • Household items
  • Stereos, radios and portable televisions
  • Bedding
  • Draperies
  • Kitchenware
  • Small furniture
  • Rugs
  • Small appliances
  • Tools, all kinds
  • Jewelry
  • Cosmetics.
  • Used clothing for men, women, children and babies, is especially needed.

Mattresses cannot be accepted, and exercise equipment is accepted only if it is small enough to easily load onto a truck.

If you have an item you’re wondering about, it’s best to call the pick-up service at (888) 518-8387.

For regular pick-up, visit www.vvadonations.org or call (888) 518-8387.

An operator will take your information, and you’ll be given a pick-up date. Items are picked up between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the designated day. You don’t need to be home. Just leave items outside, clearly marked for Vietnam Veterans of America. A tax-deduction form will be left on the door.

Butcher asks that we let our readers know that a pickup is typically scheduled within three to five business days.
