“A suspect is seen on video prior to 9 a.m. entering the lot,” said Dayton police Sgt. Jared King. “He breaks the window of two vehicles and was unsuccessful in an attempt to steal the vehicles.”
The suspect was able to steal a Hyundai Sonata.
Police received the calls around noon, 1:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. The first call was for the stolen vehicle and the other two were for the attempted vehicle thefts.
All three incidents appear to be related, King said.
Police returned to the job center around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday for a third attempted vehicle theft.
Montgomery County Administrator Michael B. Colbert said they are aware of the break-ins and are working with police and St. Vincent de Paul, which owns the building, as the investigation continues.
“The safety and well-being of our employees and visitors remain our top priorities,” he said. “The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office maintains a continuous on-site presence at the job center, and trained security staff are also on site as part of our standard safety operations.”
Colbert reminded staff and visitors to lock their vehicles and keep any valuables stored out of sight.
People should report any suspicious activity to security or law enforcement immediately.
“By working together with law enforcement and following these safety measures, we are committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment,” Colbert said.
Bryan Suddith, deputy director of Montgomery County Veterans Service Commission, said a vehicle was stolen from their parking lot on Tuesday and another was taken on Wednesday.
Veteran services is at 627 S. Edwin C. Moses Blvd., about half a mile away from the job center.
Suddith said a veteran’s vehicle was taken Tuesday and a staff member’s vehicle was taken Wednesday.
The staff member’s vehicle was reportedly recovered a few hours later.
Dayton police were able to confirm at least one vehicle was stolen from the veteran services lot this week and later recovered.
It hasn’t been determined if it’s connected to the vehicle theft and break-ins at the job center.
