Two people have been taken into custody in the death of a 12-year-old girl who was shot while sleeping at her Dayton home last week.

“Two arrests have been made in connection with the murder,” Dayton police Maj. Brian Johns said Thursday morning. “This is still an ongoing investigation.”

Isabellas Amor-Carlos was killed after shots were fired at three homes in the first block of West Fairview Avenue around 1 a.m. Friday.

The Dayton Daily News is not naming the suspects because they have not been formally charged.

Johns said earlier this week investigators believe the suspects were targeting one of the other two homes.

All three homes are occupied, but Amor-Carlos was the only person shot. Her 11-year-old sister and father were also home at the time of the shooting.

“I tried to resuscitate her, but I couldn’t,” said Michael Nooks, the Amor-Carlos’ father. “As a dad you’re supposed to be able to protect your kids, but I couldn’t in that situation.”

The suspects fired approximately 37 rifle rounds from the street toward the houses, Johns said.

“This house was just caught in the crossfire,” he said last week.

Miami Valley Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 cash reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Amor-Carlos’ death. It was not clear if a tip led to the two arrests.

Amor-Carlos was a seventh-grader at Charity Adams Earley Girls Academy and had attended the school since kindergarten, Dayton Public Schools Superintendent David Lawrence said.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to all family and friends during this difficult time,” he said. “The school had counselors on-site on Friday and will continue to provide support to any students who need it. Families who need support outside of school hours are encouraged to call the Montgomery County 24/7 crisis support line at 833-580-2255.”
