Crews extinguish heavy fire at Dayton apartment complex

Firefighters rescued two cats Monday morning after heavy fire broke out at an apartment building near the corner of Salem Avenue and Princeton Drive in Dayton.

When crews arrived to the 1100 block of Salem Avenue they found heavy flames on the second floor and heavy smoke, Dayton Fire Department District Chief Adam Landis said.

“[The] guys made a real aggressive attack,” he said. “They were under some pretty heavy fire conditions and did a great job.”

No one was home at the eight-unit building at the time of the fire and no firefighters were injured, Landis said.

The top floor of the building is unlivable, and the American Red Cross was called to help displaced residents. The fire resulted in an estimated $20,000 in damage, Landis said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
