Investigation continues into 4 killed in crash near Dayton airport following hit and run

Investigators continued Tuesday to piece together their investigation into a Monday hit and run accident on Interstate 70 that led to another wreck near the Dayton International Airport that left four men dead from various Dayton-area communities.

Four employees with Enterprise Mobility, Larry Edwards, 77, of Tipp City; Stephen Cassel, 72, of Clayton; Richard Coatney, 77, of Piqua; and Richard Turnbull, 66, of Lewisburg were killed in the second crash near the entrance to the airport terminal, the Ohio State Patrol reported.

The initial crash was reported at about 2:10 p.m. Monday on I-70 near the exit to Dayton International Airport Access Road. Troopers said a Volvo driven by Clayton Hughes, 26, of Blacklick and a Nissan Frontier driven by James Skipper, 60, of Dayton were traveling east on I-70.

Hughes rear-ended Skipper and failed to stop and continued to drive away from the scene of the crash, according to a media release.

Skipper followed Hughes, continuing to give information to dispatchers.

Hughes exited I-70 onto Airport Access Road and continued onto Terminal Road where his vehicle ran into a minivan driven by Edwards around 2:14 p.m., according to the Ohio State Patrol.

Lt. Dallas Root of the OSHP Dayton Post said that all four people who died were in the Pacifica. The men worked at the nearby Enterprise Mobility business at the airport.

“We are horrified and deeply saddened by the crash that occurred near Dayton International Airport yesterday. We are heartbroken this event resulted in the loss of four Enterprise Mobility team members and injuries to another. We mourn with our team, the family and friends of those impacted by this tragedy,” the company said in a statement.

One other person from the minivan was taken by ground ambulance to Miami Valley Hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries, according to a release.

Hughes sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken to Kettering Health Dayton, according to the Patrol.

According to the highway patrol, they believe impairment was a factor in both crashes.
