Ohio Senate president tests positive for COVID

Ohio Senate President Matt Huffman, R-Lima, tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss the General Assembly’s opening ceremonies in Columbus on Monday, a spokesman said.

“He was diagnosed with COVID symptoms before the New Year. His symptoms are mild and he is doing well. He will be back at the Statehouse after following CDC guidelines and existing Senate policy,” said Senate GOP spokesman John Fortney.

Huffman replaces Republican Larry Obhof as the senate president, one of the three most powerful political posts in state government.

He represents the 12th senate district, which includes Champaign, Allen, Mercer and Shelby counties and parts of Auglaize, Dark and Logan counties. Huffman previously served four terms in the Ohio House.

Matt Huffman and state Sen. Steve Huffman, R-Tipp City, are cousins.
