Boy, 15, crashes stolen car trying to flee police in Sidney

Sidney police now say that alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in a crash involving a 15-year-old boy driving a stolen car.

The underage driver is accused of failing to pull over for a Sidney police officer around 2:45 a.m. for minor traffic infractions. The driver kept going on East Russell Road, then a block away crashed into a fire hydrant, according to Sidney police. Charges are pending, police said.

Alcohol is suspected after a 15-year-old boy crashed a stolen car into a fire hydrant early this morning while trying to avoid police in Sidney.

A Sidney police officer tried to pull over the driver around 2:45 a.m. on East Russell Road near Broadway Avenue for minor traffic violations when the driver did not stop and continued east on East Russell Road, according to Sidney police.

One block later, the car left the roadway and crashed into a fire hydrant near the intersection with Port Jefferson Road.

The driver suffered injuries and was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital, police said.

The car had been stolen sometime Saturday night from a Sidney residence, police said.

Charges are pending against the teen, and alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor, according to Sidney police.
