Abilities First employee accused of stealing from clients

Employee allegedly took more than $5,000 from four clients; board is reviewing the complaints, agency says.

MIDDLETOWN — An employee from Abilities First has been accused of stealing more than $5,000 from four clients with the organization, according to a Middletown police report.

The report said four male clients of the Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities told the organization their payee is First Core and an Abilities First employee contacted the banking institution and requested additional money from each of their Social Security accounts.

The employee, according to the report, allegedly kept the withdrawn money. The four clients said the unaccounted $5,200 — $200, $300, $1,500 and $3,200 — had been stolen since Jan. 1, 2010.

Middletown detectives were unavailable for comment Wednesday.

Wendy Planicka, spokeswoman for Butler County Board of DD, said a board reviews complaints by clients who believe they were abused, neglected or had a crime committed against them.

She refused to comment further.

Abilities First provides services for children and adults with disabilities, developmental delays and other special needs in Southwest Ohio.

In 1958, Abilities First, 4710 Timber Trail Drive, began as Doty House where eight children were provided educational and therapy services not available in the public schools.

Today, more than 1,200 clients are served annually by an average of 130 employees in an eight-county region, according to the Abilities First website.
