Alleged car thief captured moments after the crime

Dayton police said a man was arrested only moments after he allegedly stole a car at gunpoint Thursday night.

Officers were first dispatched to the area of the Shell gas station at 1415 South Smithville Road around 11:45 p.m. on a reported armed robbery.

The victim told police a man approached him while he was sitting in his car. The suspect displayed a handgun, and reportedly fired one shot into the ground to get the victim out of the vehicle.

The suspect, only identified as a man, took the car and drove off in the area, before police spotted it only moments later near the intersection of South Smithville Road and Tuttle Avenue.

Police said officers continued to follow the vehicle as it drove onto westbound U.S. 35. Officers waited to pull the vehicle over, and requested other officers to set up along U.S. 35 in the event the vehicle attempted to flee the stop.

Police said once officers were in place, police initiated a traffic stop on westbound U.S. 35 near the Interstate 75 interchange. The suspect pulled the car over, and was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect will be charged with a felony count of aggravated robbery.

No injuries were reported.
