Arrested pregnant woman claims doctor OK'd smoking pot, police say

MONROE — A pregnant Middletown woman arrested for driving under the influence with her 3-year-old daughter in her van Sunday night told police that her gynecologist said it was alright to drink and smoke marijuana while expecting.

Monroe officers stopped Audrey Frye, 25, of the 1200 block of Jackson Lane, at about 10:10 p.m. on Gateway Boulevard after her vehicle failed to turn from a turn lane and stopped in the middle of the road.

According to officers, they smelled a faint order of alcohol on Frye who told them she drank a glass of wine with dinner. She exited the van to submit to a field sobriety test. During questioning, Frye said she had smoked a couple “bowls” of marijuana, according to the police report.

Frye was transported to the Monroe police department and arrangements were made for her daughter to be picked up at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle, James Roach, 28, of the 1300 block of Girard Avenue, was arrested on a warrant out of Middletown Municipal Court.

When asked why she was smoking pot and consuming alcohol while pregnant, Frye told police that “her gynecologist told her that it was healthy for a woman to consume a glass of wine a day when she was pregnant and it is not harmful to the baby if she smokes no more than six cigarettes a day and smokes just a small amount of weed,” according to the report.

While at the police station, Frye submitted to a urine test, but while in the rest room, officers heard water running in the sink, According to police, Frye admitted filling the tube partially with water “because she didn’t want to get caught.”

Frye’s breath test for alcohol was negative, police said.

Frye was charged with OVI, a traffic control device violation, obstruction of official business, two counts of misdemeanor child endangering and possession of open container because a bottle vodka was found in the vehicle.

She was released to her father and is scheduled to appear in Lebanon Municipal Court at 2 p.m. Thursday, June. 24. According to police, when Frye exited the police meeting room, she ran into the closed door of Police Chief Greg Homer’s office.
