A preliminary hearing has been set April 8 for Trauthwein.
He was taken into custody in the 100 block of South F Street hours after he allegedly robbed Hamilton Smoke & Beverage at about 10 a.m. and shot 54-year-old clerk Rajendrakuma Shah in the arm.
Shah was treated at Atrium Medical Center in Middletown for injuries that were not life-threatening.
Trauthwein was arrested at about 4:20 p.m. near F and Ross streets after police attempted to question him about the robberies.
Trauthwein attempted to run from police and a brief struggle ensued, during which Trauthwein attempted to take an officer’s gun, police said.
The aggravated robbery charges — one count each for robbing Hamilton Smoke & Beverage, 946 High St. on Tuesday and three other businesses in a span of three days — are a first-degree felonies. T he fifth count is for allegedly attempting to grab the police officer’s gun.
He was also charged with two counts of felonious assault, a second-degree felony.
A silver handgun matching the description the weapon used in the robberies was recovered during an investigation, police said.
The crime spree on Tuesday began just before 10 a.m. when he allegedly entered Condor Insurance, 935 Main St. brandishing a gun and demanding cash.
He fled the business with an unknown amount of money and 10 minutes later demanded cash from the Hamilton Smoke & Beverage cash register and shot Shah after Shah attempted to stop him, police said.
Police also say Trauthwein robbed employees at Richards Pizza, 4117 Main St. at gunpoint on Sunday, March 28, and Domino’s Pizza on the city’s West Side on Monday, March 29.
His arrest came the same day that Hamilton police released surveillance video of the Richards Pizza robbery and offered a reward for information leading an arrest and conviction of the suspect.
Lt. Scott Scrimizzi praised detectives for Trauthwein’s arrest.
“I am extremely proud of our detectives and the effort they put forth in investigating this robbery ... Everyone in the office contributed in some form or another allowing us to get this guy off the streets quickly, and before anyone else got hurt.”
Trauthwein’s arrest marked the second time in two weeks that officers arrested an armed robber within hours of the crime. Dennis Cain, 39, of Hamilton was arrested March 18, after allegedly robbing two business within 12 minutes.
