Chase suspect crashes after pursuit called off

Police say a motorcyclist crashed and was injured after being pursued by officers in St. Paris.

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. Sunday when an officer attempted to pull over a motorcycle that committed a traffic violation in the 200 block of South Springfield Street in St. Paris.

According to a release, officers gave chase when the operator didn’t stop and continued heading south, with speeds in the chase exceeding 90 mph.

Officers determined the pursuit was too dangerous and called off the chase. A short time later, the motorcycle was found crashed in a field near Christiansburg Jackson Road and Old Troy Pike. Officers say the operator lost control, hit a sign on the side of the road, and came to rest in a field.

The suspect suffered several injuries in the crash, but attempted to flee the scene before being apprehended by police. The suspect was transported to Springfield Regional Hospital, before being flown by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital.

The injuries, identity, and condition of the driver was not immediately available.

Police say they are unsure why the operator didn’t stop, and the incident remains under investigation.
