Clark Co. deputy assaulted, suspect arrested

A man was arrested after allegedly assaulting and trying to flee from a sheriff’s deputy.

Derek Howard, 24, at-large, was arrested at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday and charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing official business and disorderly conduct, according to a media release from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Howard was attempting to gain entry into a residence in the 300 block of Galewood Drive in New Carlisle when Deputy Dale Stull arrived on scene. After being confronted by Stull, Howard became increasingly hostile and threatening.

While being placed under arrest, Howard broke free and attacked Stull, who was later assisted by a neighbor and additional deputies who had arrived on scene to help take Howard into custody.

Stull was injured during the altercation and was later treated and released at Springfield Regional Medical Center.

Howard was booked into the Clark County Jail this morning and later appeared in court.
