Dad admits it was ‘bad idea’ to let 10-year-old son drive

A neighbor thought the loud bang she heard outside was one of her dogs playing.

Instead, a van had crashed into her garage that was driven by a 10-year-old boy, according to police.

David Inman, 48, of Hickory Trail Place, said his son lost control of the vehicle when driving it just after 9 p.m. June 7.

The van went across the street and into the garage, according to a police report.

“The garage’s exterior wall was indented from the impact with large cracks on the interior side,” according to the police report. “Several bricks were knocked out and drywall damage was apparent inside of the garage.”

The van’s bumper was scratched with pieces of wall on it, police said, and tracks could be seen in the grass leading from Inman’s driveway to the neighbor’s garage wall.

Police said Inman admitted “that it was a bad idea to let his son operate the van.”

The boy told police that his dad asked if he wanted to drive the van and he said, “yes.”

Inman was charged with child endangerment and outstanding warrants for OVI and open container. He was booked into the Butler County Jail on those charges.
