Dayton arson suspect indicted in Chase Bank robbery attempt

A 30-year-old Dayton man accused of arson was indicted Tuesday in connection to an attempted robbery early this month at a downtown Chase Bank.

John H. Searls faces a felony robbery charge and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, according to a Montgomery County grand jury report.

Searls was arrested May 1 within five minutes of the attempted robbery reported at the bank, 40 N. Main St., records show.

During police questioning regarding the bank incident, he allegedly admitted to setting six fires in the city, police said. He was charged with arson May 2 through Dayton Municipal Court.

He remains in the Montgomery County Jail, where he has been held without bond since his May 1 arrest.
