On Tuesday, the elder Cole pleaded guilty to a second- degree misdemeanor form of domestic violence involving a family member believing they were in danger of physical harm. In exchange, a felony domestic violence and misdemeanor unlawful restraint charge were dismissed.
“I’m the pastor of a church for almost 30 years teaching people to be good,” Cole said during the hearing. “I know it’ll work.”
Judge Robert Peeler ordered the sentence after learning prosecutors, police and the victim all agreed on Cole’s misdemeanor plea allowing him to keep his job with a grocery chain.
Peeler suspended the rest of a 90-day jail sentence for Cole, who spent three days in jail after his arrest in November.
Cole was accused of striking his wife at their home in Springboro and restraining her from leaving their home after he became upset at her drinking wine.
“Alcohol is causing a problem in your life,” Peeler said. “This story could end bad.”
Cole was charged with felony domestic violence due to a September misdemeanor conviction for domestic violence in the Warren County Court.
Cole and his wife, who was not at the hearing, are to remain separated while she continues counseling, according to statements at the hearing.
