DeWine: Man stole $10K in Craigslist scam

A man accused of operating a Craigslist scam has been indicted on charges of defrauding victims in 10 states out of more than $10,000.

A Darke County grand jury indicted William S. Cameron, 55, of Lancaster, on single felony counts of grand theft and telecommunications fraud.

Cameron is accused of using Craigslist to target individuals -- including one in Greenville -- who were looking for auto parts, tickets to sporting event and farm equipment. An estimated 30 victims were caught up in the scam, according to the indictment announced Friday by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Darke County Prosecutor R. Kelly Ormsby III.

According to the indictment, Cameron claimed he had the products the victims desired, but never sent the products after they were paid for through wire transfers.

DeWine and Ormsby said the true bill was a result of collaboration between local law enforcement, prosecutors and Ohio's Economic Crimes Unit, created in 2011 to deal with fraud and scamming cases.

"We will continue this important work to make it clear that Ohio will not tolerate those who defraud consumers," DeWine said.

Ormsby said the indictment is a step in the right direction.

"I very much appreciate the efforts of the Attorney General's Office in this matter," Ormsby said. "I am pleased to cooperate with them in bringing Internet thieves to justice."
Cameron, if convicted as charged, faces a maximum sentence of 54 months in prison.
