During the investigation into the fight, police discovered a connection with an ongoing drug investigation at 1046 N. Russell St. on the city’s northwest side.
That turn in the aftermath of the fight resulted in a search of the North Russell Street address and the discovery of the “sizable meth lab,” King said.
The police division did not describe what was meant by “sizable.”
Police found several items in the home that indicated the possible production of methamphetamine since about the time the original investigation in early February.
The illegal production of meth leaves behind hazardous byproducts and waste and that put at risk three children in the home — ages 9, 10 and 13 — as well as three adults who were in and out of the house at various times, King said.
Neighborhood residents were put at risk as well because of the meth lab, King said.
The lieutenant said the dismantling of the lab involved police and the Urbana Fire Division, who were assisted by a Champaign County sheriff’s detective and Sidney police Officer Jim Jennings, both of whom have specialized training in the neutralization of meth labs.
No charges have been filed, according to the police division. The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with additional information about the meth lab investigation is asked to call police at 652-4350 or the police division’s crime and drug tip line at 652-4357. Callers may remain anonymous.
