2 found shot to death inside home are identified

DAYTON — The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified the two people whose bodies were found shot to death inside 130 Fernwood Ave. late Thursday as J.B. Jones and Nicole Cochran.

Both Jones, 49, and Cochran, 31, lived at the Fernwood address, and there was no indication that they were related, according to a coroner’s official.

The coroner’s office estimates that Jones and Cochran died around 6 p.m. Thursday. Their autopsies are scheduled to be performed, Friday, May 28.

Officers discovered their bodies after receiving a call around 9:30 p.m. from a man who told a dispatcher that he had not heard from his cousin in a while.

When police arrived to the apartment, they had to force their way inside, according to Lt. Patrick Welsh. Once inside, they found the bodies of Jones and Cochran in a bedroom.

Welsh said initial investigation indicated that it was a murder-suicide.

Both were shot, Welsh said. According to detectives it appears that Jones first shot Cochran and then himself. Welsh said they appear to be boyfriend and girlfriend.

The welfare check was requested by members of Jones’ family, who had gone to the apartment after they had not heard from him in a week.

Welsh said the investigation was continuing in hopes of finding a motive.
