Officers responded around 7:30 p.m. Sunday to reports of gunfire at the school, where the victim, who is not a student at any Huber Heights school, nor a resident of Huber Heights, was shot during an altercation, according to police.
The victim’s age, city of residency and condition are all unknown, though Taylor describes his injuries as non-life threatening and said he is “fairly” cooperative with detectives.
Calls to 911 reveal a good Samaritan helping the victim attempt to stop the bleeding. According to the call, the victim said he was shot in his leg, but when asked several times if the victim knew who shot him, he shouted “It don’t matter, I need help.”
There was no event going on at the school at the time of the shooting.
Huber Heights schools Superintendent Susan Gunnell said the security the district provides for Wright Brothers comes from the resource officers they have at other schools, and that any security for the school during non-school hours is provided by Huber Heights police during their routine patrols.
Lisa McKay lives across the street from Wright Brothers and said she was watching TV when she heard what sounded like a single gunshot. Moments later, police arrived on the scene. Sunday’s shooting was just another case of crime getting worse in the area, according to McKay.
“It’s been escalating,” McKay said. “This had been a very quiet neighborhood for many years. When they built this new school, there’s been a lot of issues with the walkway and there’s been an unsavory element coming into the area.”
Police found narcotics on the scene and are looking for two suspects who fled in a red four-door vehicle, according to police. Anyone with information is urged to call Huber Heights police at 937-233-1565.
