Insanity plea entered in attempted murder case

HAMILTON — A West Chester Twp. man who allegedly tried multiple times to kill a gas station clerk during a robbery has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to three attempted murder charges.

John Ravencraft, 50, 9262 Cincinnati-Columbus Road, was arraigned today by Butler County Common Pleas Judge Keith Spaeth, who ordered a forensic psychological evaluation after the insanity plea was entered by defense attorney Timothy Upton.

Ravencraft remains housed in the Butler County Jail in lieu of a $1 million bond. He will be back in court May 12 for a pre-trial hearing.

A Butler County grand jury returned indictments against Ravencraft earlier this month for aggravated robbery in addition to the three counts of attempted aggravated murder with a gun specification. The charges are in connection to a March 8 armed robbery at Shell on Cincinnati-Columbus Road, a few blocks from the suspect’s residence.

Police say Ravencraft entered the station about 11:25 p.m. and walked around for about 30 minutes talking on a cellphone. Several times he asked the 29-year-old clerk if he was “G,” according to court documents. The clerk replied “no.”

The clerk was then ordered behind the counter where the robber fired one shot at the man’s back, which resulted in a misfire, according to a search warrant affidavit sworn by West Chester Detective Doug Farris.

The gun was then placed to the clerk’s head while he was on his knees and the suspect pulled the trigger again, also resulting in a misfire, according to the court documents.

Police said that is when the clerk decided to fight for his life. He attempted to grab the gun, but was unable to do so. After a scuffle, the clerk pushed the robber away and ran out of the station.

Butler County Prosecutor Michael Gmoser plans to try the case himself along with assistant county prosecutor Dan Phillips.
