License plate at scene of crime leads to arrest

Suspect accused of damaging landscaping in Huber Heights.

HUBER HEIGHTS — An inept vandal who caused damage to the Carriage Trails development was caught because he inadvertently left his license plate at the scene, authorities said.

The same suspect was connected to a nearly identical incident last year after police followed tire tracks to his home.

Levi Durst, 18, of the 8600 block of Pinegate Way, will face charges of criminal trespassing and criminal damaging.

According to a police report, Durst drove his 1992 Jeep around the Carriage Trails development on Monday night and crashed into a chain barrier. The development has suffered thousands of dollars in damage to landscaping, drainage tiles and barriers because of off-roading.

“They drove across the grass and the beds and everything we had planted, and just tore it up,” said William Jump, president of the DEC Investment Group, which is developing the property. “They did wheelies and some spinning around, throwing mud everywhere and making a mess.”

A license plate was discovered at the scene. The plate apparently was torn off the suspect’s vehicle after it crashed into a barrier.

Police traced the identification numbers back to Durst’s Jeep, which they found was missing the front plate.

Durst originally denied his involvement, and claimed someone was trying to frame him, but he eventually admitted causing the damage, the report states.

In 2009, police warned Durst not to drive his all-terrain vehicle on the Carriage Trails development after they followed tire marks from the property right to his Pinegate Way home, according to authorities.

Durst’s mother, Stacy Arnold, said it is impossible that her son caused all of the damage at the development and she knows he was not responsible for it.

“He did not do all of the damage back there,” she said. “His truck is too old to do that kind of damage. His tires are too bald. ... My kid would not do that kind of damage.”
