Local sheriff warns of fallen officer charity scam

Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer wants to warn people about a new scam that claims to be raising money for law enforcement families who have been killed in the line of duty.

Sheriff Fischer said in an email to this news organization that he received the call Sunday afternoon. The person on the phone explained the purpose of the “charity” and wanted to know if the sheriff was willing to donate $100 to the cause.

Fischer informed the man that he was actually a law enforcement official and wanted to know how he could apply. Fischer said the caller immediately hung up.

The only information the sheriff was able to retrieve was the scammer’s number — (740) 739-6045 — Which traces back to Pataskala, Ohio.
