Mamma DiSalvo's moves past attempted break-in

An attempted break-in at Mamma DiSalvo's Italian Ristorante damaged the roof of the business, but no "low-lifes" can damage the heart of the family business.

"It makes you mad because we work hard," Roberto DiSalvo told News Center 7's Layron Livingston on Wednesday night.

DiSalvo, the youngest of three children who help run the business, said he doesn't appreciate "low-lifes" who take what they haven't earned.

He's hoping Kettering police catch the burglar who left a 2 foot-by-2 foot hole in the roof of the 35-year-old business on East Stroop Road this week.

One of the employees found "lots of water" in the back dining room area on Wednesday morning, DiSalvo said. Thinking it was a leak, DiSalvo said he went up a ladder and found evidence of an invader.

"There was a big huge gap cut out to the middle of my roof," he said. The burglar had cut into the tar and the metal roof.

The roof has been repaired and the business should be ready to resume using the back dining room by Friday morning.

DiSalvo thinks the rain helped turn the burglar away. He's also hoping the miscreant makes a mistake that leads to his arrest -- like the guys who broke in through the glass front door about three years ago.

That incident of breaking and entering occurred in May 2011, according to a Kettering police incident report, and the thieves made off with the safe and a cash register.

Had this week's burglar taken the safe, he would have made off with nickels, dimes and quarters, DiSalvo said.

All it has in it is some change, the restaurateur said, "could be 20, 30 dollars, yes."
