Man and woman arrested while forcing man to withdraw money from ATM

DAYTON — A male and female were arrested early Friday after police caught them trying to force a man to withdraw money from an Fifth Third Bank ATM machine in the Eastown Shopping Center.

Montgomery County Jail records identified the suspects as 24-year-old Rusty Smith and 31-year-old Jenna Smith. Dayton Police Sgt. Mark Ponichtera said he didn’t know if the suspects were related.

Both suspects face charges of aggravated robbery and kidnapping, according to Ponichtera. Rusty Smith was also arrested for temporary protection order violations.

Police were alerted to the crime duo after receiving a call at 3:07 a.m. from a citizen who had seen the victim, 30, and the suspects.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the victim was in Toby’s Tavern on Linden Avenue when he met Jenna Smith. While they were interacting, Jenna Smith was allegedly able to steal the victim’s wallet without his knowledge, Ponichtera said.

When the victim left the bar on foot, Jenna Smith followed him, along with Rusty Smith. It is unclear if Rusty Smith was in the bar or met Jenna Smith on the street.

The suspects eventually confronted the victim near Hearthstone Drive and Mesmer Avenue, Ponichtera said. Rusty Smith pulled out a knife and forced the man to walk with him and Jenna Smith to the ATM machine off of Linden Avenue. Shortly after that, the resident called police, who showed at the ATM machine and caught the suspects.
