Man convicted of starving horse to death

A 53-year-old man convicted of starving a horse to death is not allowed to own any horses, mules, donkeys or ponies for three years.

Mark W. Raby is in the Greene County Jail. He was sentenced last week in Xenia Municipal Court on a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge.

Raby was arrested in April after a dead horse was found March 14 on a Murdock Road property rented by Raby. He apparently left the horse behind when he was evicted from the home located off Ohio 42 between Xenia and Cedarville. It was unknown how long the animal, a 9-year-old mare, went without food before her death. but the horse had been healthy up until the neglect, according to the Greene County Sheriff's Office.

In addition to the three-year ban on owning certain animals, Raby was ordered to pay restitution for the veterinarian investigative bills. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, with 30 days suspended plus two days of jail credit, according to deputies and online court records.
