Rieder, 32, has been held in the Montgomery County jail on a $1 million bond since he was arrested on the suspicion of child rape. Rieder was one of three men arrested in February as the result of an undercover investigation on Craigslist by the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. His trial on those charges will start Feb. 19.
After his arrest in that case, a woman saw his picture in the Dayton Daily News and recognized him as the man who had robbed her at knifepoint Nov. 9, 2011 in the parking lot of the Rite Aid at 2916 Linden Ave., according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.
In the robbery case, Rieder was indicted on one count of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated robbery causing serious harm, one count of felonious assault with a deadly weapon and one count of felonious assault causing serious harm.
Pamela Miller, the victim in the robbery case, suffered a stab wound to the wrist, which severed a nerve and has left her with continuing problems, assistant county prosecutor Michelle Henne told Huffman.
Defense attorney Christopher Thompson said that “this is an issue of identification” and that Miller had misidentified Rieder.
Dayton police officer Michael Salyers, the prosecution’s first witness, said he responded to the robbery. He described Miller as “shattered” adding that “she was crying, shaking.”
Rieder waived his right to be present when Miller took the stand. Her hands quavered as she described the attack, how she was pushed backwards or fell, how her attacker climbed on top of her and held a knife to her face and neck.
“Every time I would say “please don’t kill me,” he would say that he was going to,” Miller said.
Rieder is also accused of raping the son of Kenneth H. Brandt, of Troy, who pleaded guilty to charges in that case Thursday in Huffman’s court.
Brandt, 40, is already looking at decades in prison. He was sentenced Monday in Miami County Common Pleas Court to at least 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to six counts of raping his two adopted sons and a third boy he was in the process of adopting. Charges are still pending there against another Jason Zwick, 30, of Beavercreek, who is also accused of having sex with one of Brandt’s sons. His trial is to start January 8.
