Man pleads in vehicular homicide case

A Dayton man driving without a license when his girlfriend's 8-year-old son died in a crash pleaded no contest to aggravated vehicular homicide.

Jerimy Rowland, 37, pleaded no contest on Friday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court. Judge Dennis Langer scheduled sentencing for Sept. 5. Rowland faces a sentence from three to 11 years.

La'Kell Newland, 8, died during a rollover crash on Geneva Road at 4:45 p.m. on Oct. 13.

Police said the boy was the front-seat passenger in a Monte Carlo driven by Rowland. The vehicle was northbound on Geneva when Rowland ran a stop sign and the vehicle was T-boned by a westbound Mercury Cougar on Sylvan Drive.

The Monte Carlo was pushed into a traffic sign and then flipped several times and came to land on its top. Police arriving on scene located the boy trapped under the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
