Man sentenced to 17 years in death of WSU student

A 22-year-old who shot and killed a Wright State University student in 2012 avoided a life sentence by pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence in Greene County court Friday.

Damion Mitchell was sentenced to 17 years in prison for the death of Jerelle Prather. Mitchell faced 15 years to life in prison if convicted as originally charged for murder.

It was an emotional scene in Judge Stephen Wolaver’s courtroom in Greene County Common Pleas Court with numerous members of Prather’s family making victim impact statements.

“We can’t get his life back… and you sit here with no remorse,” said Jerelle’s mother Terri Prather. “You need prayer more than we do. You’ve got to answer now.”

Their words caused an outburst from Mitchell that threatened to clear the courtroom. He turned in his chair and shouted at the family causing court officers to grab him. Later he said he wanted the family to know that he was sorry.

Prather’s father Joe Campbell said he would have rather that God had taken him than his young son.

Prather, 22, was only a few credits shy of graduating with a Bachelors degree when he was shot at the Ivy Manor Apartments on West Funderberg Road on Oct. 21, 2012. Wright State University awarded him a posthumous degree in business with an emphasis in marketing in April.

Days later, Fairborn police arrested Moore.

“That was a wonderful child. You didn’t even know him,” Terri Prather told Moore in court.
