UPDATE @ 9:49 a.m. (May 4)
Auglaize County Sheriff Allen Solomon said Wednesday there were no explosives recovered in a home where a four-hour standoff took place Tuesday.
“A handgun and knives were located along with several items that had been made to appear to be explosives; there were no actual explosives found,” Solomon said in a release.
Aiding Auglaize County deputies were detectives, special response team members, Minster fire and the Allen County Bomb Squad.
Solomon said the handgun recovered is believed to be the same weapon that the suicidal male held to his chin at the time deputies arrived. That man’s identity has not been released.
But Solomon said also inside the home was a juvenile that has been removed.
“We have great employees as do the other agencies, and all did a great job with a tough situation,” Solomon said in a release. “We train and sometimes question the amount of training but the result here is the benefit of great people and proper training.”
UPDATE @ 7:47 p.m. (May 3)
The surrender of a 38-year-old man armed with a handgun has ended a four-hour standoff near the village of Minster, Auglaize County Sheriff Allen Solomon said, and authorities are spending part of this evening clearing the man’s property of possible explosive devices.
The man, whose name is not being released, was deemed to be suicidal, the sheriff said.
Deputies were dispatched to the home, on state Route 119 east of the village, after a call to the sheriff’s office about 12:30 p.m. concerning a man armed with a handgun who was threatening suicide.
Deputies learned that a juvenile male was in the home as well, but they were able to safely remove him and began negotiations with the male. When he refused to leave the home, the Auglaize County Special Response Team was dispatched.
Further information developed at the scene revealed the possibility of explosive devices in the home. That prompted the dispatching of a second special response team, this one from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, along with the bomb squad from the Allen County Sheriff’s Office.
After about four hours, the man surrendered and was taken to a hospital.
At 6:30 p.m., special response team members and the Allen County Bomb Squad were clearing the house and outbuildings of possible explosives.
Other agencies assisting in the standoff and resulting investigation include Minster and New Bremen police, the Minster Area Life Squad and Fire Department, St. Marys Police, Ohio Highway Patrol, the Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency, the Shelby and Allen County Sheriff’s Offices.
