Mothers give emotional statements before Hamilton man sentenced for child rape, filming act

A Hamilton man was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday in Butler County Common Pleas Court for raping a child and filming that child in a sex act.

Judge Charles Pater sentenced Johnanthony Boyd to life in prison with possibility of parole after 15 years.

Boyd, 20, of the 1200 block of Vine Street, was arrested by Hamilton detectives on May 24, 2019 and booked into the Butler County Jail, where he has been held in lieu of $205,000 bond.

Boyd was indicted on nine counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, nine counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor and one count of rape. He previously pleaded guilty to one count of pandering and the rape charge in Butler County Common Pleas Court. In exchange for the plea, the remaining 17 charges were dismissed.

Hamilton police and prosecutors said Boyd recorded a video of an 11-year-old child performing a sex act on him. All of the images were in Boyd’s possession on his phone, according to the arrest report. The crimes occurred in 2018.

The victim’s mother spoke before sentencing, but the victim was not in courtroom.

“My daughter has to suffer for the rest of her life … he has to too,” said the sobbing mother of the victim.

Lisa Boyd, Boyd’s mother, who also sobbed during the hearing, asked for the minimum sentence for her son.

“There is no winning in this case,” Lisa Boyd told the judge, “I don’t believe him to be evil …. this is not him.”

The mother said she is not minimizing what her son did, but he has always worked and been a helpful person, and he has told her he is committed to treatment.

Boyd’s attorney, David Albrecht, told the judge his client has a minimal record, is a high school graduate and is a young man with a long life to live.

When first arrested, Boyd was less than truthful to police, but he eventually told the truth, the attorney said.

“He confessed … put the nails in the coffin,” Albrecht said. “This case was never going to to trial.”

Boyd offered no statement to the victim’s family before sentencing but asked for a minimum sentence.

Pater said he found both the act of rape and the filming of the act to “later watch, get his jollies or whatever,” as two separate crimes that deserved consecutive sentences.

Boyd was also declared a Tier III sexual offender, meaning he will have to register with the sheriff in the county where he lives every 90 days for the rest of his life.
