Judge Mary Wiseman sentenced Hoffmann to a year in prison for the illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance charge and gave him community control not to exceed five years for the importuning charge.
Anthony Schoen, assistant Montgomery County Prosecutor, said Hoffmann violated his position of trust. “You’re counseling students and you’re using that position of trust to violate and abuse them, so I think it was very serious what he was doing and I’m glad he is going away for a certain period of time,” he said.
“You stole the everyday joy of life from her,” said one of the victims’ mothers to Hoffmann before the sentencing. “It has been replaced with fear, stress, harassment, irritability, distrust, self-doubt and panic attacks.”
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s office started an investigation of Hoffmann after a detective was summoned to the high school in June on a report of an inappropriate text that appeared on a victim’s cell phone that involved Hoffmann.
A court memo said Hoffmann admitted to a detective that he suggested a threesome with him and a 16-year-old boy to one of the victims.
The memo also said, “Defendant attempted to explain away the situation by stating that he was trying to make Victim 1 feel better about herself.”
The detective also learned after questioning Hoffmann that he had received inappropriate photos on his cell phone from another student, according to documents.
Detectives found a “large quantity” of photos of this victim in various states of undress on Hoffmann’s work iPad and found three bags with panties in them and a open box of condoms in his school office.
The documents said, “Defendant sent Victim 2 pictures of himself in the panties with his bare penis protruding out of the top of the underwear.”
Hoffmann will have to register as a Tier 1 sex offender, which means he must register once a year for 15 years after his prison release.
He was also ordered not to have contact with the victims.
