Online escort tried to extort money from doctor

Woman demanded $5,000 to keep quiet about relationship.

LEBANON — An online escort from Fishers, Ind., who threatened to expose her relationship with a retired surgeon from Hamilton Twp., recently plead guilty to lesser charges

Emma Shepherd, 56, plead guilty in Warren County Court to coercion and menacing related to stalking charges. Shepherd was originally charged with extortion after police said she threatened the surgeon unless he paid her $5,000.

Lt. Jeff Braley of the Hamilton Twp. police said the retired doctor communicated and met with Shepherd, who advertised her services online. When her demands started escalating, he contacted police and they staged a sting operation in the parking lot at the Kroger store on Ohio 48 on Jan. 11.

“We had our victim meet her with a body wire on and I listened to the conversation,” Braley said. “She threatened to tell his family and ruin his reputation for meeting with her. During the course of that taped conversation, she was trying to coerce $5,000 out of him.”

The doctor began corresponding with Shepherd via Escorts.com in June and actually had sex with her in exchange for $750 on three occasions, according to a police report.

After he called it quits in October, she continued to e-mail him and at one point told him “he had more to lose than she does,” the report said.

The doctor and his escort never met in Warren County or he would be facing charges as well, Braley said.

Braley said Shepherd failed to show up for her original court date and was later found in a hotel room in Indiana where she told police she attempted suicide. After she failed to show in court, Braley said she started sending messages to the doctor and his wife and even a couple of packages.

“I had to gear up with all my safety gear and open the packages to make sure they weren’t threatening,” he said. “She sent them used lingerie.”

That’s why she was charged with stalking, Braley said. After entering her guilty plea on the lesser charge, the court fined her $250, court costs and put her on probation for a year. She also served two days in jail. Court records show she paid $1,089 on Feb. 24.
