42 people indicted in Butler and Warren counties

Grand juries, which meet in secret, review criminal charges brought by police and prosecutors and investigate possible criminal behavior. The proceedings are usually one-sided, because the accused is not present and witnesses are not cross-examined.

A grand jury may issue an indictment if it finds probable cause that a crime was committed and the accused person is responsible. An indictment is an accusation that must then be proven in court. The grand jury may also elect to issue no indictment.

Indictments returned during a recent session of the Butler County grand jury:

Curtis Everhart, 1834 S. Breiel Blvd., Middletown; indicted on one count each of possession of heroin, aggravated possession of drugs (direct), criminal damaging or endangering, menacing, and driving under suspension.

Jeffery Allen Burton, 1207 Curtis St., Middletown; indicted on one count each of possession of cocaine, trafficking in cocaine (direct), and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Mandy J. Childers, 945 Greenwood Ave., Apt. 2, Hamilton; indicted on one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Dana L. Colquhoun, 5241 Southview Drive, Fairfield; indicted on two counts of aggravated possession of drugs, and one count of possession of cocaine.

John Edward Andrews Jr., 125 Beckett St., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of having weapons while under disability, and possession of drugs.

Elizabeth Powell, 163 Hatherly Drive, Hamilton; indicted on one count of trespass in a habitation.

Johnny L. Harris, 357 Hampshire Drive, Apt. D41, Hamilton; indicted on one count each of trafficking in cocaine, possession of cocaine, illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia, and operating a vehicle under the influence.

Jake M. Shelley, 6135 Fairfield Road, Oxford; certified back to the lower court on one count of obstructing official business.

Ralph Stuart Hacker, 4016 Bramble Court, Hamilton; indicted on two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence.

Lois J. Neal, 2010 Cathwedral Lane, Hamilton; certified back to the lower court on one count each of petty theft, and unauthorized use of property (direct).

Walter Allen Griffin, 828 S. 2nd St., Hamilton; certified back to the lower court on one count of assault.

Keith Pugh, 2040 Winona St., Middletown; indicted on two counts each of aggravated possession of drugs and aggravated possession of drugs (direct), and one count each of illegal conveyance of weapons or prohibited items onto grounds of specified governmental facility, and falsification.

Malcolm Jahmal Franklin, 705 Hanover St., Hamilton; indicted on four counts of felonious assault (direct), three counts of felonious assault, two counts of tampering with evidence (direct), and one count each of murder and murder (direct).

Ernest Ford Shackleford, 1036 Fairview Ave., Hamilton; indicted on six counts of illegal use of a minor in a nudity-oriented material or performance (direct), and four counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor (direct).
