Derrick Watson, 40, was arrested at his home in the 1700 block of West Riverview Avenue after Dayton police’s street crimes unit executed a search warrant there Tuesday morning. Detectives were alerted to possible drug sales at that residence by complaints made on the Crime Stoppers tipline, said Sgt. Chris Fischer.
An undisclosed amount of crack cocaine was found inside, police said.
Watson faces felony drug possession and drug trafficking charges, and was booked into the Montgomery County Jail. He lived at the home with his mother and father, but police did not indicate if the parents were aware of the alleged drug activity. However, as a result of the drugs found and belief that drugs were being sold at the home, police issued a nuisance abatement for all three people. A nuisance abatement allows officers to evict people up to a year from a property if that property was being used for illegal activity, such as drugs or prostitution.
“You get kicked out of your house for a year. It’s very effective. It’s a deterrent,” Fischer said. “It’s the actions of another that’s causing a whole family to literally be evicted for a year.”
Police said they receive dozens of drug complaints through Crime Stoppers, and take actions on the ones they determine to be legitimate. To leave an anonymous tip, call (937) 222-7867.
