Stolen Social Security number trouble for Clayton man

A Montgomery County resident's identity was stolen by an illegal resident in New Jersey, causing him trouble with the law.

Justin Cooper, of Clayton, said his wife encountered police during a routine traffic stop and was told the owner of the vehicle -- her husband -- was wanted throughout the United States.

Police said, "there is a warrant out for the owner of the vehicle for felony burglary with a deadly weapon," Cooper told News Center 7.

Another man in the country illegally had been arrested for a violent crime in New Jersey, and gave Cooper's Social Security number, according to police.

The officer in the traffic stop with Cooper's wife told him it was noted on his record, but it took a while to see it and Cooper might encounter problems with law enforcement in the future.

Determined to get his record cleared, Cooper contacted local authorities and the Ohio Attorney General's Office. He struggled to get any answers and one official told him that because his credit had not been affected, there wasn't much that could be done.

After calls from News Center 7 to a sheriff's office in New Jersey, Cooper's record was to be cleared Friday.

A supervisor said they "did some research and found out the suspect was actually deported from another county in our state, meaning he has been removed from this country ...

"We are clearing (the warrant) from our system. (Cooper) will not be harassed about this."

Cooper said he is extremely relieved.

"This could be you. This could happen to you at any time. I luckily found out about it in a nice way," he said. "Someone might get yanked out of their car and find out about it in a completely different way."
