Students charged after fight at Lakota school

Two Lakota East Freshmen were charged with assault for fighting at the Lakota East Freshman building Tuesday, Sept. 22.

One of the 14-year-olds was charged with assault and released to his parents after receiving treatment at the Cincinnati Children’s Liberty Campus, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. The other 14-year-old was charged with one count of resisting arrest and two counts of assault for hitting the other student and the dean of students, who was attempting to break up the fight. The student was treated and then placed in the Juvenile Detention Center.

The dean, Bill Brinkman, had a visible knot on his head, according to the sheriff’s office.

It was the first physical altercation to take place in the building since it opened in Sept. 2008, said Associate Principal Suzanna Davis.

“This was an unfortunate and isolated incident,” she said. “The best indication we have is that it was something that took place this morning. “

She said the topic of fighting is discussed with parents and students, and expectations are clear.

Davis sent an e-mail notice to parents to alert them of the incident and encourage them to discuss the matter with their teens to better understand more appropriate ways to resolve conflict.

“I want to share this with you this morning, because it is important that we take a moment to remind our students about appropriate ways to handle conflict,” she wrote.

“Lakota East is committed to providing a safe environment where all our students can learn. Disruptions that put any of our students in harm’s way will not be tolerated.”
