Police say Wilborne and Antone Anderson, 26, of 3057 Walters Ave., Cincinnati, who is charged with misdemeanor theft, walked into the Walmart at approximately 2 p.m. and attempted to steal a home theater system.
The two were apprehended by Walmart loss prevention officers and escorted to the store’s office to wait for police.
While they waited, police said Wilborne grabbed a pair of scissors off a nearby desk and threatened to stab loss prevention officers.
“They basically just got out of his way,” said West Chester Sgt. Joe Gutman.
The two fled the scene in a car, but were picked by West Chester police up less than a mile away near the intersection of Cincinnati-Dayton Road and Interstate 75.
Gutman said Wilborne threw the pair of scissors out the passenger window before police ordered he and his alleged partner in crime out of the car.
They were arrested without further incident.
The robbery charge is a felony — of the first degree — because scissors are in this case considered a deadly weapon, Gutman said.
The alleged scissors threat also made the situation worse because of their cost, Gutman said.
The home theater system cost $498, $2 below the felony mark for theft. However, because Wilborne allegedly fled the store with a $4.88 pair of scissors, the theft became a felony.
“With the robbery charges, the theft charge is the least of his worries,” Gutman said.
Both men were taken to the Butler County Jail.
