UPDATE @ 7:50 p.m.: A disc giveaway highlighted the opening of the disc golf course in Centerville this evening.

“It’s a great opportunity to walk through Stubbs Park and get some exercise while you’re doing it,” Mayor Brooks Compton said.

The course was completed in 2015, but tonight was the ribbon-cutting and dozens attended.

Compton said he used to play, but before courses were built. He said he played in college, on campus, where the targets were benches and lamp posts.

According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, the game is played in about 40 countries across the world. The sport was formalized in the 1970s.

FIRST REPORT

Centerville Mayor Brooks Compton will officially open the Stubbs Park Disc Golf Course for play with a grand opening ceremony at 6 p.m. today, 255 W. Spring Valley Road.

The event includes disc golf demonstrations by local experts from the Dayton Disc Golf Association.

Discs will be given away, while supplies last.

The 18-hole course begins with wide-open fairway shots, while introducing challenges of water and trees.

The course design accommodates the walking paths and cricket field already at the park. There is no fee to play.

Built in 2015, the course was largely funded by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources NatureWorks Grant, with additional funding from the City of Centerville and a grant from the Centerville-Washington Foundation.
