Fire Destroys Grain Elevator In Mercer County

It could be several days before fire investigators are able to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed one building of a seed company in Mercer County, according to Rockford Fire Chief Ralph Rhoades.

Saturday evening, firefighters from Rockford and five other departments responded to the Burtch Seed Company on Tama Road, about five miles northwest of Celina. The fire could be seen for many miles.

The fire was contained to the elevator that Rhoades said was approximately 90 years old.

Other fire departments that responded to the fire reported shortly after 7 p.m. included Celina, Mendon, Coldwater, Ohio City, and Chattanooga.

Rockford firefighters cleared the scene at 6:30 a.m. Sunday and have since been called back twice to douse hot spots, said Rhoades.

"We probably used 100,000 gallons of water," said the longtime fire chief.

They drew the water from two nearby ponds.

There were no injuries.

Firefighters were successful in keeping the flames from spreading to nearby buildings that are part of the Burtch Seed complex.
