Kroger adds new mobile payment options, rewards debit card

Forgetting your cash or card won’t be a problem at Kroger much longer as the company rolls out a mobile payment option this year.

The regions largest grocery provider launched Kroger Pay in Columbus today, a mobile payment option that combines a shopper’s customer loyalty card and payment. It’s expected to speed up checkout, according to a statement from the company.

Ten other markets will roll out the service in the spring and Dayton stores are expected to have it by the end of the year.

To add Kroger Pay, shoppers can download Kroger’s app on their smartphones and insert any major credit, debit or prepaid card. The payments will then show up in the QR code already used for loyalty rewards and digital coupons.

The Cincinnati-based company also launched a Kroger Rewards debit card, which offers bonus fuel points, discounts on Our Brands and double rewards points when the card is used within Kroger Pay. It’s currently available in Columbus and all of Colorado. The rest of Kroger’s family of stores will get the cards this spring.

“Kroger is redefining the customer experience by creating innovative ways to pay at our stores and online,” said Gary Millerchip, CEO of Kroger personal finance and corporate strategy integration lead. “Kroger Pay and the Kroger REWARDS debit card are two more ways we are transforming our payments model to benefit our customers.”
