The new Antioch College $7.8 million wellness center, which will promote health and fitness and provide additional recreation options in the area, will open on Saturday.

The 44,000-square-foot facility underwent more than a year of renovations following approval by the Antioch College Board of Trustees in May 2013.

The college initiated the upgrades to the building to provide a a recreational space on the campus and to attract and retain students.

“Not only will this wellness center serve the college, it will serve a huge need in the community of Yellow Springs, said Monica Hasek, the wellness director. “The community of Yellow Springs has never had a recreation center with an indoor swimming pool and courts. The center will be the bridge between the college and community.”

The public can purchase a membership to the facility.

The center’s features include a six-lane regulation length indoor swimming pool; a large therapeutic whirlpool; a fitness room with cardio equipment, strength machines, weight-lifting equipment and a walking track; indoor courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton; racquetball courts; outdoor tennis courts; a large space for special events, lectures, conferences, retreats and performances; a lounge and patio spaces; and a healthy snack bar.

Changes to the building, which is the former Curl Gymnasium, preserved historic architectural elements and improved energy use, according to college officials. The upgrades to the building also included an elevator, handicap lifts in the pool and whirlpool, ramps and wider hallways to comply with federal disabilities accessibility requirements.

The college will not have to pay an estimated $1,669 in water and sewer fees associated with filling the wellness center’s pool following a unanimous vote by the village council on Tuesday.

“It seems that we have been looking for ways to promote economic development,” said Yellow Springs Village Council President Karen Wintrow. “I consider this economic development. One of the ways I think we can do it effectively for us is by using our utilities and enterprise funds.”

The wellness center is one of several construction projects on the campus which include: a $1.1 million renovation of the Foundry Theater;a $4.6 million renovation to the central geothermal plant; and a $5.4 million renovation to the arts and science building.

“I can’t wait to get my membership,” said Yellow Springs Councilman Brian Housh said.
