Apartment fire sends two residents, one officer to hospital

HUBER HEIGHTS — Three people, including a police officer, had to be taken to area hospitals after an apartment fire at 4547 Bufort Blvd., Wednesday afternoon.

The fire started in the apartment of a woman with limited mobility. Three Huber Heights police officers arrived on the scene first. Two went into the building to rescue the woman while the third stayed outside and guided them through the smoke.

Huber Heights Police Sgt. Charles Taylor said officers are familiar with the woman and knew of her medical issues, making them concerned for her ability to get out.

One officer was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation along with the woman and another resident. The second officer was treated at the scene.

Huber Heights Fire Lt. David Webb said the time of the day helped because everyone in the building was awake and got out safely.
