Revival Center Ministries International has been holding book-bag giveaways in the community for more than 15 years, said Belinda Mitchell, an elder with the church. For the past three years, the church has held a community outreach day in Dayton’s Westwood neighborhood.
This year, because of destruction caused by the tornadoes, the church shifted focus to the Trotwood area, where 1,144 structures — mainly homes — were left unusable.
“We want to let people know we love them and wrap our arms around them,” Mitchell said.
The church is hosting a Back to School Book Bag Giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Trotwood Community & Cultural Arts Center, 4000 Lake Center Drive.
The event, billed as “a day of food, fun and fellowship,” will also have a hot dog cookout with cotton candy, snow cones and popcorn. A bounce house for children will be on site, as well as the Trotwood police and fire departments.
Bookbags and supplies will be available at the gathering, and the church is working with its community partner, Crayons to Classrooms, to distribute the supplies to Trotwood schools.
If you would like to donate, the church is collecting 17-inch backpacks and school supplies that can be dropped off at Revival Center Ministries, 3011 Oakridge Drive in Dayton. Drop off hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon; Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
